The Number Devil: A Mathematical Adventure

by Hans Magnus Enzensberger

Robert hates math until a mischievous Number Devil starts visiting his dreams. Over twelve nights, he shows Robert the wonders that school skipped: prime numbers, Fibonacci numbers, Pascal's triangle, square roots and infinity.

Why it's useful

A chapter book that turns big mathematical ideas into puzzles and stories, ideal for curious readers ready to go beyond the curriculum.

  • Patterns before rules. Robert discovers ideas by noticing patterns, the way mathematicians do.
  • Big ideas made friendly. Primes, powers, triangle numbers and infinity are explained with playful made-up names.
  • One night, one chapter. Each dream works as a stand-alone lesson, perfect for a weekly read-aloud.

Try it in class or at home

  1. One night a week. Read a chapter aloud, then try the main idea together.
  2. Prime hunt. After the primes chapter, use a hundred chart to cross out multiples and find the primes that are left.
  3. Pascal's triangle. Build the first 10 rows as a class and hunt for patterns.
  4. Rename it. The Number Devil invents his own names for math terms. Have kids invent names for terms they know.
