The Doorbell Rang
by Pat Hutchins
arithmetic More grade 3 books
Ma has baked a dozen cookies for two kids, six each. Then the doorbell rings, and rings again. Every time more friends arrive, the 12 cookies get shared all over again, until Grandma turns up with a huge new tray.
Why it's useful
This short picture book is one of the best ways to introduce division as fair sharing.
- Same total, more groups. 12 shared by 2, 4, 6 and then 12 shows that more people means smaller shares.
- Links division and multiplication. 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 4 × 3 = 12 come straight from the story.
- Predict, then check. The repeating pattern invites kids to work out each new share before you turn the page.
Try it in class or at home
- Share the cookies. Give groups 12 paper cookies and act out each doorbell ring.
- Fill in a table. Record kids at the door and cookies each, then look for the pattern.
- What if 5 friends came? Talk about what to do with leftovers. It's a natural way into remainders.
- Write the next page. Kids pick a new number of cookies and visitors and write their own doorbell scene.
